Diesels to Glencairn Scholarsgate

As some may know I run two train services (steam and diesels engines) on the same track layout.
Here is a plan of the layout and the services that run on the 'Diesel Days'.

Diesel Train Services

A -- Fiddle Yard. Is 'The Junction' for all trains north and south that passes Wyndham Farm.
The line over the bridge to the Fiddle Yard is not used on diesel services– B -- Diesel Engine Shed. C – Glencairn Scholarsgate Station. D -- Sovereign Street Station and Yard.

1 - Wyndham Farm. 2 -- The Ash Farm Fields. 3 -- J H Thompson Builders Merchants. 4 -- Marston's Scrap Merchants and house.

5 -- Small Industrial Estate. 6 -- The Bridge. 7 -- North Road. 8 -- Winterwood Manor.

The name Glencairn is from the small family estate just south of Wick, Scotland. With a liking for Class 52s and Class 55 locomotives I could not visualise such locomotives venturing so far north.

Glencairn in model form lies north of Ladybank and south of Newburgh in Fife. It is a terminus station originally served by The Caledonian Railway. There was a North British Railway Station in Glencairn, but was closed by the Dr Beeching cuts. Like in many places throughout Britain, what were small towns are now growing larger. Glencairn is one of those towns.

To accommodate the firms at Sovereign Street (a former North British Station), a single line was built from Glencairn to Sovereign Street. The old line past North Road and Winterwood Manor was relaid and services resumed.

An old college I attended has been demolished and is now an housing estate. The estate is called Sholarsgate. I like the name, so Glencairn Station is now Glencarn Scholarsgate.

East Coast Services.

Passenger trains from Edinburgh and London Kings X arrive at The Junction, pass Wyndham Farm, the diesel shed, J H Thompson's Builder's Merchants and into Glencairn Scholarsgate. Because there is no run round at the station (deliberate), engines are changed for the onward journey to Aberdeen. All services are by Class 55s

West Coast Services

Passenger trains from Glasgow and London Euston arrive at The Junction and travel the line to Glencairn Scholarsgate. Once again engines are exchanged and the train continues to Inverness. These services are by Class 52s.

Passenger services are also ran from Edinburgh to Inverness and Glasgow to Aberdeen plus a local services Stirling to Perth. Classes 25, 26, 27, 37 and 47 are dedicated to these runs.

There are also Pullman services, Mail Trains, Parcel traffic and the 'odd goods train'.

A DMU runs from Perth to Ladybank; another from Glencairn to Auchtermuchty. A third DMU service runs Dundee to Perth via Glencairn Scholarsgate and return, They also run to Sovereign Street and travel the 'old North British' line.

Here are a couple of photographs

The end of the line -- Glencairn Scholarsgate.

Looking good - what size is the layout?
Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

Thanks bulleidboy.

The layout used to be in the loft of our house, but family were worried if I took bad whilst up there. I was given 'permission' by household authorities that I could have the small bedroom. -- Approx. 11ft by 8ft give an inch or two.

Wyndham Farm. The farm is actually near Wigton, in Cumbria and belonged to our family.

If you are quiet you might see, along with the horses and dog, rabbits and a badger.

Thanks guys.

(The late) Driver John Thompson did drive for W A Glendinning's of Shotley Bridge, Consett. Many a Saturday night and into the wee small hours, he would tell (true) stories of him 'on the road'. When Corgi brought out the wagon it was a MUST have. So much so, I have three of the wagons.

Next to Winter & Harwood's I have a building -- Archbolds & Glendinning's. Archbolds of Gildersome, Leeds was another Company which I knew the drivers.
