I have 6 of the coaches and have had no problems in the two years running them on DCC. The only problem encountered was a reluctance for the coaches to remain on R2 curves.

Have you tried fitting a known good decoder into the unresponsive loco and the suspect decoder into a loco that works on DCC? Perhaps if funds permit a decoder tester would be a good addition to your toolkit.

Tom, Perhaps a method of testing the drive is by using a rolling road. Mark a front and rear driving wheel in a similar position and then run the loco slowly in both directions checking for any discrepancy in the distance travelled by the wheels.
