First you need to determine the type of "old track" you have, how old is it? The very old track was just mild steel and rusted easily and is a lot of trouble to keep clean. The new Nickle Silver (NS) track is far superior and much easier to keep clean, if it is NS then i would suggest you clean it a...

Is the loco new ? Yes Did you fit the decoder ? Yes Has it been run in on DC ? Yes If it was on my workbench the first thing i would do is remove decoder and test loco on DC. Hi guys I have a DCC Sentinel which goes in fits and starts, the contacts are clean and touching the motor runs well in both directions when run free, but as soon as it has to drive the gears it stops, runs intermittently for 10s then stops. I had the same problem with Dapol ale wagons, the Dapol wheels have quite small flanges compared to Bachmann/Hornby.
I changed all my wheel sets for Bachmann type set the B2B and hey presto no more derailments.
A little extra weight also helps.
