Re: airfix 0 4 2 tank

The Airfix 14xx was designed to run with their own early DCC like system so is very easy to break the pick up to motor connection on it. The motor has to be removed and then the brush holders swopped round so that with the long prong that originally descended into the depths of the chassis is now on...

Re: mainline/bachmann manor class dcc conversion

The springs will not be the issue; the chassis halves are live to the wheels and the motor must be isolated from the chassis. Something must be making a contact between the chassis sides and motor.

Re: mainline/bachmann manor class dcc conversion

Bob - to resolve the matter disconnect the decoder from the motor and get hold of a short circuit indicator, be it a multimeter or a bulb/LED connected to a battery with circuit broken by needing to join two wires together and check for any circuit between the motor and the wheels.

Re: mainline/bachmann manor class dcc conversion

If you have cut those tags what is holding the brush spring and brush in place? I recall people recommending changing the bolts for plastic ones in order that the metal tags carried on fulfilling that purpose. Is the error indicating a short or no loco found?

Re: mainline/bachmann manor class dcc conversion

How have you isolated the motor contacts from the chassis sides - the fixing bolts for the contact strips fit into either chassis side, and then those contact with the axles to make the pick ups

Re: mainline/bachmann manor class dcc conversion

Not the simplest - is it a Mainline or Bachmann one, the latter have a different motor buried in the chassis. You need to check carefully for any wiring you have made causing a short and check again that the motor is fully isolated from the pick ups. A multimeter with a built in alert for a short ci...

Hornby seem keen on him, any coincidence they are bringing out a 9F and he slams the Bachmann one; might he have been given the heads up early by Hornby.
