Are the connecting rods a loose fit. The pins that fit in the front and back driving wheels shouldn’t be tight.

They're OK, but then if they weren't the problem would be the same in both directions

Dont think it would be the wheel quartering but it is worth a check. That would give a more stop go juddery type of effect.
Is one of the con rods bent or is a piston rod stiff or rubbing when the wheels move sideways in the chassis when cornering? Is puzzling! Actually a challenge.

Possibly, just trying to think of the options. I reckon something is rubbing on the curves in one direction. The drive wheels will take up the shape of the curve, the middle set will move outwards.

Thinking... The con rods. Are they to the design which has pins at either end that slot into the wheels, and a screw in the middle to hold them on? Could it be that the con rods could be putting too much pressure on the wheels when the loco is going round curves? Could even be one of the pins on the end is not quite sittingat 90° to one of the wheels? These con rods do need to have a small amount of "Give" at the ends where the pins are. Was just a thought.
