I did say "The long pieces of bare wire" which if left as shown run the high risk of being able to touch another bare wire. Result is a short circuit! I didn't mean the overall length of the wires.
Try to learn to solder the wires with less insulation stripped from their ends - about 3mm is more than sufficient. Or if you're uncomfortable with this then use as suggest Heat shrink tubing cut to length and slid on once the soldering has cooled and then reduced it in size by using the element part of the soldering iron to shrink down the tubing.

Thanks fb.
I think I read it too fast and missed the bare wires bit.
I'll look into heat shrink, might just about shrink in the car atm it's that hot.

Edit:

to any and all, I have got some heat shrink cheap from maplin closing down but it is sadly too big for purpose, only cost me 1
All they had was 5mm so what size should I be getting to go round the end of 16/0.2mm gauge wire?

sorry for the double post but I thought I would show off my first ever point motor in operation, yes the layout is on its side but it's the only way I can atatch the point motor.

I temporally wired the motor to my Gaugemaster Combi accessory ports, no CDU but its wired through a momentary switch so not going to burn out the motor.

I would suggest you get some shrink wrap that is a tiny bit bigger than the wire you are going to shrink it on to. What do you think?

How about measuring the diameter of the insulation .

2mm or 2.5mm unshrunk or even 3.0mm if it shrinks 2 or 3 times its original size.
