Not a problem with the Bulleid Pacifics, as they could carry discs as well as having the electric lights on. For other locos I believe oil lamps were used if the train started at dusk and it would be dark by the next stop.

Also here's a picture of L1 67717 clearly showing the electric lights at the bunker end were the same as the front end.
