Well How fast Did the Mallard go. Never found out did we. Because there was a bend in the track. So it must depend on if you have a length of straight level track to test it on. So I guess we shall never know.

Reading the Hornby Forum it looks like they were planning on using the OO Live Steam club exibition track, which is a multiple large oval track. Superb track but I would be very apprehensive of sending £4-500.00s worth of live steam Mallard around it at anything like approaching the 126 they are looking for.

But ultimately it is their money so if its how people wish to enjoy it then fair enough. There will also be people who see weathering a loco as a destruction of what can be limited edition and expensive models.

I think what the hope is to show that something that with a complicated machine its possible to fettle it and get better results and as the option is to get good slow control or fast, its obvious which will appeal to younger members and it shows the difference between the live steam which is a small machine and an electric model which is a product.

However is it the way to attact new people to the hobby, I think given the cost and limited availability of live steam it would be only to convert people who want to move from regular models.

I actually think the biggest problem the Live Steam guys have now are the collectors. Have you seen some of the prices that are being asked on eBay? I'd like to know what prices are actually being achieved but people are getting them out of the cupboard not to play with, but to sell for silly money.
