The first ones come from Japan and the rest are made up at Newton Aycliffe (which I think is in England rather than Italy) from parts imported from Japan.

I believe that on diesel the IEPs will be slower than a 7-coach HST over the steeper parts of the West Country.

There were two complete trains coming out of the Italian factory yesterday on the Southern news. They will come by rail through the Channel Tunnel and be operational in July. It was a combination of UK/Japanese/Italian work. These were paid for by private funding, whereas the first ones were Government financed. The reason for building in Italy was that they had the capacity - the UK didn't - which in someways is good - they were too busy building other trains.

UK or Italy that is the question. The 800 is from the UK and 802 from Italy, I think. What is the difference?

Edit. The 802 is more powerful so it can run at higher speeds on long gradients.

This article says the ones for GWR are all being built in Italy with others at Newton Aycliffe (County Durham, north of England )
