Default Railnscale/Shapeways rollers

Help please, has anybody used these rollers for making cobbled or asphalt roads either between the rails or just for a street scene?
They are quite expensive for what they are, but they look like they do the job.
Could they be used with plaster I wonder?
Hopefully somebody can throw some light on how good they are, or have an alternative answer, but please not the end of the ball point pen solution.
