Best to keep the magnet and pole pieces together when removed as magnetism can be lost if the parts are separated...........HB

Just gone back to look at the first bit and I realised. Yes. With these, if the magnet is the wrong way round they would run backwards. I found out by giving my old Hornby Dublo 3 rail locos new magnets and I had one the wrong way round. Puzzled at first... Was like "Why is it doing that!"
So it could be that in the past somebody has stripped it down and positioned it the wrong way round without knowing.

Reversing the magnet and the pole pieces with it will cause the motor to rotate in the opposite direction from before.
Put it back wrong way around and you may well find the motor turns the same way as before or may not run as well especially if the magnet has lost magnetism or the pole pieces are the wrong way around to the magnet.

Care is needed. You technically need to reverse the magnets North and South poles around the motor.

the magnets will only go in one way up so all i can do is switch which side of the armature they sit

Turn the whole lot 180 degrees, so as the magnet and its lefthand side keeper/pole piece goes back on the righthand side. You have then moved magnetic North pole around to the South poles side.
