With more than a good few years of actual railway experience under my belt I can tell you that there are no fixed rules to 'Point work' on UK railways, lack of space often being the driving factor, They design the layout in relation to what it is required to achieve and some very odd visual lash up's can result but in operation they make perfect sense, Translate that to a model railway and the constraints become larger, space, cost, available parts all play a part in producing what appears to be a prototypical layout and it's often what you leave out as a result that makes it work, In the end it's your layout, your choices and if it works for you and looks good you will win a bet that somewhere in the UK that very same layout exists.

Older UK track layouts in real life tended to avoid 'facing' points (that is a turnout which the switch end is normally reached first so there is a choice of route depending upon which way they are set) for siding connections and main to main crossovers, and unless these were unavoidable any movement to be made into sidings or crossing from one line to another involved trains backing in.

The reason for this goes back to the early days before interlocked signals and points and some really horrific accidents where points moved underneath express trains. The railway companies and the Board of Trade remained nervous of these for many many years.

Sidings with trailing points needed less equipment such as facing point locks because movements across them in a facing direction was always carried out slowly. Signalling was slightly simpler too. This made them cheaper to install and maintain.

Large siding complexes however might be served from a reception line and of course this would provided with facing connections with proper facing point locks and junction signals, but your average wayside station would normally have no facing points.

Modern motor operated points simplify all this so nowadays facing connections are just as likely as trailing ones.

I had a few occasions assist the signalman when a pair point wouldn't show as throw, the hook switch pole on the loco a bit of leverage and hear the bar click into place, the lever points with a locking bar seemed more reliable...
