Can anyone tell me the relevance of the different running numbers on Black 5 locos

Are we talking about the Loco Numbers relevant to the place they were built.....

In case it helps these are the running numbers for Stanier 5MTs with building date and location and principal differences.

44658 – 44667 1949 Crewe

44668 – 44669 1949 Horwich (fitted SKF roller bearings on driving axles only)

44670 – 44685 1950 Horwich (44670 – 44677 fitted SKF roller bearings on driving axles only, 44678 – 44685 fitted fitted SKF roller bearings, )

44686 – 44687 1951 Horwich (fitted SKF roller bearings and Caprotti rotary valve gear)

44688 – 44697 1950 Horwich (fitted Timken roller bearings on driving axles only)

44698 – 44717 1948 Horwich

44718 – 44737 1949 Crewe (44718 – 44727 fitted with steel firebox)

44738 – 44747 1948 Crewe (fitted Caprotti rotary valve gear)

4748 – 4753 1948 Crewe (fitted Timken roller bearings and fitted Caprotti rotary valve gear)

44754 – 44757 1948 Crewe (fitted Timken roller bearings and fitted Caprotti rotary valve gear, 44755 – 44757 fitted double chimney)

Locomotives with LMS four digit number were renumbered as British Railways 44746 – 44753, 44758 – 45499 after 1948. A few were numbered M4xxx instead for a few months until the 4xxxx numbering system was approved.

I might have said I did it all from memory, but I am sure you wouldn't believe me!

The problem is that if I don't put my books back in the place I got them from I lose them. I spent three days (on and off) looking for one which I had misfiled, and there is a book about Caledonian Locomotives I still cannot find! One of these days I will tidy up!
