Nice one Chops, you sure do eat a lot of jello in El Paso

We call it jelly in the UK but that's what you call what we call jam. Nice to be different isn't it

I was first introduced to black current jam in 1967 during my brief residence in the UK. Wonderful stuff.

Truth be told, these Tyco Jello (er, "jelly") cars were mass produced in the 1980's when Tyco was purchased by the General Foods Corporation. While they have been out of production for the better part of three decades, they are so proliferate that I was picking these up at a $1 a piece because no one wanted them, at any price. I thought the color blue was rather fetching so I cobbled up an electric locomotive and caboose (brake van) under the now disbanded Conrail brand. That particular prototype, of which this is a rough fascimile, EL-C, was an enormously rugged design that went through four different railroads, from the early 1950's to about 1987. This piece is a replication of the last one to be taken out of service, under the Conrail banner.

The EL-C began life hauling coal out of colleries in the mid-southeastern U.S., then was sold up-river to the New Haven Railroad, in the 1960's, which bankrupted, was folded into the Penn Central system, ran under a funereal black paint scheme, which in turn went belly up in 1968 in a colossal failure, and was re-organized by the Federal government in 1976 as Consolidated Rail to prevent a collapse of the north-eastern economy that was still dependent on rail (such as coal fired plants and other bulk shippers and consumers). As of late, Conrail was hence purchased and split by the rail conglomerates of the Chessie System and Norfolk Southern and is again a private concern.

To what do we have to thank for this domino string of bankruptcy? The interstate highway system that completely disassembled a heretofore brilliant rail network in favor of transportation by automobile. While the US has large natural reserves, we are spending them like sailors on shore leave. Rail networks represent the ultimate in conservation and efficiency, not to mention comparative safety, but everyone wants a car.
