Default LED indicators for control panel

I need some help.

I'm just getting back into model railways after 35 years away - now building an N gauge layout in the loft. But I have a problem working out how to 'do' a control panel for the points.

I have 20 sets of points powered by a mixture of SEEP PM1 and PM2 motors fed from a Gaugemaster CDU - all very standard and works fine. However I want to include LEDs on the control panel to show how each of the points is set (green for clear and red for derailment!).

I bought a couple of points position indicator modules from a supplier on ebay that are supposed to register the pulse from the CDU and use it to switch the LEDs on/off but I'm damned if I can get them to work either at all or with any degree of consistency.

Is there another way of producing the result I'm looking for using relays of any kind? If anyone knows a way or has a wiring diagram they'd make me very happy.

For info I'm using a Hornby HM2000 controller with both 18v 300ma AC and DC uncontrolled supplies available.

Welcome to the forum.

Have a read of this websites Mimic panel indication article...... Link to panel indications

Seep PM1 have a built in change-over switch that can be used but PM2 do not and you can either add a lever micro switch operated by the free end of the Seep PM2 drive pin or use a Latching relay as your point motors are fed via CDU. See the lower article sub headed "Unable to fit a change-over switch?"

That looks really useful ( might have to go to evening classes to fully understand it) - time to sit down and inwardly digest.

These look quite similar to the ones I tried - but the instructions are much more comprehensive. And bearing in mind you've already had success with them I might give them a try.

OK so now I'm confused.

I've successfully tested a Seep PM1 with green and red LEDs - when one is on the other is off. With my knowledge of electronics that's what I call a result.

However, when I try to get clever and use bi-colour LEDs, so that when one is red the other is green and vice versa it all goes belly up.

I can get one red and the other a slightly dim green but when I trigger the point motor, the dim green turns red (good) but the other red goes out rather than turn green.

Can anyone help?

Hi
Can you advise on the number of leads the Bi-colured LEDs have - Two or three?
If three are they common Anode or common Cathode type?

Hi Flashbang,

Three leads, common anode in the centre. I'm using a one thousand ohm resistor and eighteen volts DC if that helps.

As the LEDs are common Anode (Positive) wire like this...



Note; in the above drawing a 12 volts dc supply is shown, but your 18 volts dc supply will work OK too.
