I think the issue here is where do you think the people of Swansea would want to get out of their Diesel trains and get in the the electric trains? Cardiff? Bristol Parkway? Or do you think that all trains on the fleet should be fitted with Diesel engines just for the benefit of the people of Swansea not having to change.

As it happens it has been a right cock up and does not matter anyway - but Swansea is an important enough place that it should be an integrated part of the wider network and not a backwater subject to a restricted service using special stock.

It is hard to see how many people would use a North-South line, but given the state of the road network if properly implemented it should be a lot more viable than in other places which are better served with roads and should stimulate the economy in the area if people can travel easily. A hard border between the two parts or Ireland will probably stimulate the economy in West Wales too if it becomes just as hard for the Republic to trade with Northern Ireland as with mainland UK and they might as well ship straight to Fishguard for a speedy connection to the rest of the UK cutting out Northern Ireland.

The biggest one mistake was not fiddling the books to close lines, but not making it law they couldn't be built of for 50 years.....

Me being cynical thinks it is just a way to announce existing plans as something new because someone noticed that all the newly announced rail projects were just in-fills based on reusing bits of closed line.

If I saw a proposal for reinstating the missing mere 16-miles of Woodhead I might take note - but if that is not in the plan we are not going to see rebuilding of the Great Central, Derby to Manchester or anything similar to deal with capacity issues.

My proposal for an easy win that will probably pay for itself is reopening West of Braintree to connect with Stansted airport. An airport in East Anglia that is virtually inaccessible by public transport from the majority of its hinterland! A circular Stansted Express via Bishops Stortford and Witham would make a lot of difference and all can be achieved by reinstating around fifteen miles of track to connect with electrified lines at both ends.

Liverpool Street, I think. There was also a service northwards across to Manchester/Liverpool, somewhere like that. Not sure it hasn't been discontinued.

An accountant's comment is that they did not know their marginal costing from their absorption costing. (or did not want to)

Sorry, I'll get my coat..
