The Hornby one I have is slightly different from the one I linked to in that the raised pattern around the knob is a short dash getting longer the further clockwise you turn it - i.e. slow to fast over the full range. As John said you have to zero the knob before you can move the slide switch on the right from FWD to REV and back again.
Quite why the one I linked to has what appears to be a centre off AND a FWD/REV switch is beyond me. Rob

Looking up dc controllers has made me realise how few are available these days with the likes of ECM having long gone and AGW given up on model railways. Maybe the solution will be a second hand handset that does not have a switch linked to a new transformer. Find it slightly odd no one seems to make as dc controller with a centre off control knob as my dcc system (Roco Multimaus) is precisely that.
