pic no3 brass tag on the right may need pushing in . Look's OK to me . There can be a problem with the wire from the rear bogie to the motor it as been known to brake replace. rear bogie may not be picking up power. Is the spring OK in the rear bogie, Did you get my P/M about spares,

Ok - we have a winner!

So, a small push on the right hand brass tag closed the contact and makes the motor run. No obvious way to keep it pressed in though - does this need soldering or is there some sort of glue substitute?

It should stay put where ever you leave it, pushed in or pulled out.

The top of the tag looks like it has been squeezed together. I would pull it carefully apart and then put the end of a thin screwdriver in the top and push the tag together again to try and reshape it. Might help. I have done a similar thing in the past. Hard to describe.

Might need a new set of brushes. Mind that very small spring does not spring out and gets lost.

Does anyone know of any resource online that can help me understand basics like:
- what/where are the brushes?
- what does the wire to the other set of wheels do?

I’m sure there are other questions that I don’t even know that I don’t know

Why dont you google on U tube things like repair hornby motors or how to repair Lima motor
After you have watched a few vids about repairing model locos you will soon pick up how it all works.

This might help with the Lima motor. https://youtu.be/X6UfgdFzR7w

The wire to the other set of wheels (bogie) is an additional power pick up to help overcome dead spots on the track and particularly with points.
