Yes, absolutely make sure you use the right materials for what you want to achieve. Each has its own pros and cons. For me, wood wouldn't have allowed me to make my inlines and hills so easily in a small layout. If you don't need a material that is easily sculptable, go with wood, it's tried and tested. But if you do have a need for insulation board instead, I can attest that it works well (if properly supported underneath), is easy to paint with cheap acrylics, and so far hasn't been affected at all by the cold or damp of my garage.

I have not noticed a smell. Is it bad?

I would have thought if you paint it any smell would disappear. You must paint both sides and the edges.

Er... Air freshener? Perfume? If using air freshener use in well ventilated conditions. I had to do something to aa tent I bought secondhand. I managed to reduce the smell a bit.
