Default 3ft and 1ft or 2 and 2 - Loft Layout

Hi,
Will be starting making the baseboards in the next day or two. The lofts usable dimensions are 20ft by 7ft. Regardless of the plan I intend to maximise the space with 4 ft of board leaving me roughly 3 ft to move back and forth.

It's the width dimension I have the question on. Would I be better making it even both sides or would a wider side on one be better. Noted this is a 'length of string' type question, however wondered if the 3 and 1 would give more flexibility/realism to the layout?

Or even 3.5 and 0.5 (just for two main lines round the other side)

I'd go for as narrow as possible one side and as wide as possible the other. Just be aware that 3ft is about as far as you can stretch across a layout without destroying all in front of you.

Yes the 3 and 1 makes sense. I'll make sure the track is perfect on the wider side to minimise derailments because leaning over too much with my growing midriff will break the boards never mind everything else. :00

If you go down each side end to end and something across one end then your have no way to loop round just dead ends, make one side 4' x 4' for 4th and 3rd rad curves at the far end and the other side 4' X 4' some where about the middle of the other side with another loop so your trains can be left running round a circuit, the odd bit from the middle to the far end opposite the other 4' x 4' loop section could have a narrow dead end siding you can walk between either side with a dog leg walkway. the idea is clear to me but may not be to other's

He might have a board across both ends tinker. What makes you think only one end?

I intend to full board around the circumference if that helps and pop up like a meerkat from the middle (hatch).

Many, many years ago I did an L shaped board 2' wide connected round the other side of the loft with another L shaped board 6" wide to make a nice long run.
Personally I wouldn't go wider than 2' - remember that in the corners the reach will be over 3' on the diagonal.

If he is popping up in the middle then a simple full loop round all 4 walls...

Thanks all for the pointers. I hadn't thought of the reach especially the corners. I think I'll chalk the floor with plan A and see how that looks.
