Although we are about 20 miles away we felt it go under our house. It felt like a wave passing under us, very strange feeling made worse by the fact there was no noise.
The Folkstone quake was very localised, but it caused quite a lot of damage in the part of the town that was affected. Earthquakes are much rarer in Britain than they are in other countries, particularly Japan. How much damage a quake will do does not depend so much on the magnitude, but how deep it is in the Earth's crust. A smaller magnitude quake on the Richter scale can do more damage if it is near the surface.

Our house over here oddly is built to British Standards for earthquake proofing. I don’t suppose many UK houses are built to comply with those BS.
