Default Fitting Hornby TTS to Bachmann Class 20

This week Hornby released their TTS decoder for the Class 20 as a separate item so I thought Id have a go at fitting it to my Bachmann version.

I already knew that the model was fitted with a 21 pin decoder and that the TTS decoder was supplied with an 8 pin plug so Id ordered a Gaugemaster 21/8 pin adapter.
This is what it looks like with the body removed.

Adapter fitted in place of the original decoder. At this stage I’m hoping the Hornby speaker will fit but I have a sugarcube speaker on standby just in case.

Trial fit. Remove the plastic housing from the supplied speaker and it will fit in the space already provided by Bachmann. The initial plan was to sit the decoder above the motor.
This is the point where I tested the decoder and it’s functions on the track - all ok.
But a trial fit of the body shows that the decoder sits too high above the motor.

The answer was to remove the plastic Bachmann housing for the speaker so that the decoder could sit where the speaker would have been.
I then scrapped the Hornby speaker and soldered in the sugarcube which sits just in front of the decoder on top of the ballast weight.
Tidied up the wiring with some tape, programmed and tested again.

You got in before I finished typing the next post.

Yes, very happy with the outcome. Very easy conversion, only 30 minutes including shooting the video clip.

That sounds pretty good - even WTD might like it? Nice video.

Hell like the next one more.
I have just added the new 9F decoder to the Railroad Crosti.

As anyone who has taken one of these apart, the decoder is located in the loco rather than the tender making fitting the TTS version a little challenging.

When I did this to my Railroad Tornado I added pickups and the electric plug/socket to the tender but with the 9F I found that the decoder and a sugarcube speaker would just fit into the smokebox allowing the 8 pin plug to slot straight into the socket on the loco chassis.

Its all tested and sounds good although the loco does run the wrong way so some reprogramming of CV29 is needed.

CV29 adjusted so it now runs the right way. Running through the sounds a couple of the louder ones seem to crackle a little but it could be some vibration where the speaker and decoder aren’t stuck down.
When I replenish my supply of speakers I’ll pop a different one in in case I have a dodgy one.
