Default Signal box scratchbuilding

Hello all,

Been building an abandoned signal box for my end to end layout.

Made from plasticard, balsa wood and clay.

I think the window frames look extremely good. Looks like they could do with a rub down and a coat of paint.

Excellent work indeed. I love the weathered effect you have made. It just looks ace.
Signal box condition depends on the region and timeframe you are operating. If you are in South West Wales, only abandoned signal boxes will look weathered as there is a custom among signal box staff in these parts to get the paint out in between passing trains. I have never seen such prestine looking signal boxes. (All boxes down these parts operate by older methods (Levers with block instruments and traditional token machines for certain lines though most main lines are track circuited. Only token branches are not)).
It was rare in my area to enter a signal box and not have fresh paint fumes wafting around. In places the paintwork must be an inch thick!
Other areas of the country varied compared to the time period one has modelled and the customs of the staff. Also, the larger the signal box the less time staff have free to spend on painting the things so some city or town signalboxes it was continual physical work so painting was the last thing on their minds!

I'm very impressed with the work you've done as it looks brilliant. It is not easy to get the weathered look like you have achieved.

Around our area, if the signal box (or indeed any buildings) are abandoned they quickly lose the glass into a thousand pieces. Your efforts look great, but if it is truly abandoned rather than run down and neglected I'd suggest at least one shattered window!

Depends where regarding broken windows. An old signalbox that was abandoned on the Heart of Wales line (Known as Central Wales line amongst train crew) went for years out of use with the glass intact. They dont get vandalism in the middle parts of Wales. Is only in the more populated south of Wales which gets issues. A homeless man took over the signal box before he was asked to leave and the box then started to decline. Then it was rescued for the Gwili Railway.
I used to pass and I teresting old wooden station building on my route just before Fishguard Harbour. While some window panes had gone, inside it had been left as it was, and inside were said to have all the old bookwork and items which it used to use in every day operation. I believe these have now been removed when the station was reopened about 2010? They reopened it to add some extra services as two trains per day with a 12 hr gap wasnt that practical for use by the locals. I believe they now have a good service with four trains per day. I'm not sure if the wooden building is still there or if it was preserved for somewhere else?
