After a slow start on my layout design thread I can now finally say that the layout "exists" in its infancy and with lots to do so I have started a layout thread. Until now the design has only existed in my head and has been through many variations already. I'm still undecided on the complete look but it will evolve as it grows.
I have mentioned before about the White Pass and Yukon route and how this has inspired my thinking. I am not trying to replicate it at all but it gives a general idea of what I'm aiming at for one end..... I have also decided on an incline from left to right to add some height and a feature. It's 1 in 40 so should be fine for most things to run and certainly adds some interest to the front viewing angle which will be limited by the height of the layout. Lots of gluing and shaping to do next (and removing foil from the insulation board!). I will be adding a bridge before the incline section. This will allow me to cut the baseboard down so I can work on it on the workbench. The river height will be below baseboard level so should add some depth to break up the long board. Feels good to finally get started properly! Lots to do but looking forward to it. The rest of the layout is as yet undecided so literally anything could happen! Thanks for reading. It looks very interesting and I will be watching. I need inspiration and motivation at times so will follow this closely.

I wanted to have an incline when I started but the advice I got in particular from the hobby shop was don’t do it because for the incline to be of an acceptable angle it would not fit into the length of the layout so I would seek advice on this before you start

Thank you for the comments.
The incline is around 1 in 40 so from research should be absolutely fine for most engines. I have no plans for long trains with lots of carriages so I’m confident it will be fine. Paul |

Don't make the mistake that I did and have part of the incline on a curve. This has given me heaps of problems with derailments, until I learnt to camber the track. Generally though a pain in the rear end ![]() ![]() ![]()

You say based upon the White Pass route, do I assume it will be North American based? If so 1 in 40 shouldn't be a problem. A friend of mine running a Chessapeake & Ohio layout had a 1 in 35ish on quite a curve and pulled substantial freights with ease.

That’s good to hear. Thank you for the post.
The right hand side tunnel through the cliff will be very loosely based on white pass & yukon, however I fully expect the odd “lost” British steam loco to find its way onto the layout. As said above, I’m designing as I go so who knows! ![]() I’m gong with the “it’s my layout; I’ll do what I like” rule. Having fun is the main aim. |

For those unfamiliar with the White Pass railway
