Another approach that I've used successfully in the past is a flat baseboard, but using Woodland Scenics risers under the track, which gave enough height for undulating scenery around the trackbed....

Yep - 3 volt and only single speed with the standard powerpack (but slow running). I may well build a small speed controller to put in circuit to give some fine control though - will decide on that...
